There are multiple people and posts that I’ve seen on this site that express their deep disinterest in seeing the new female Nightfury.
Which, sure. I can see how you wouldn’t like the design for it. Compared to the cool, rough, dark, scaly design of the male Nightfury, the female one comes off as…underwhelming? Personally, I enjoy the original design of Toothless as well.
BUT.
YALL NEED TO CHILL OR SOMETHING ABOUT PERSECUTING DREAMWORKS AND THE FILM DESIGNERS.
1) It’s an animated children’s movie, nota personalized attack against you or your ideas about what fictional dragons you’d like to imagine look like.
2) Males and females of the same species can look vastly different depending on their daily lives and roles that they carry out. For example, peacocks. Male and female peacocks look wildly different because it’s the male’s job to show themselves off to get a female.
Not because the ancient sentient being of animal creation decided that there would be a person on Tumblr in 2018 that would personally victimize themselves for the design of male and female animal species. It’s literally called “Sexual Dimorphism”
3) There’s most likely a reason that the female Nightfury isn’t black and rough to blend in with the night sky. Maybe the female Nightfuries hunt for prey and stalk through the clouds. Perhaps this dragon on the poster is an albino, since genetic mutations are a thing that happens in the world.
4) Sure, maybe Dreamworks just wanted a dragon that could be easily marketable to girls. But look back at when HTTYD first came out: There were Toothless shirts for boys and girls, there were little pink backpacks and socks with Toothless on them, as well as blue and black Toothless clothes and merch for boys as well. And what’s to stop little girls from continuing to like Toothless after this new movie comes out? It’s not like Dreamworks waves their wand of capitalism and suddenly, all the little girls in the world froth at the mouth for the new white Nightfury. People are allowed to like what they like, despite what corporations put out.
On another point for this movie, the people who make this series put serious time and effort into creating thoughtful and provoking character and world lore. They even made sure that the new armor that the people in the village of Burk wear look like dragon scales, but are just rounded polished stones. BECAUSE IT WOULD MAKE SENSE. THE village of LITERAL dragon tamers would want that Crispy Dragon Aesthetic
™ but not actually harm the dragons and use their skin and scales. AND IT LOOKS DOPE AS HECKIE.
So before anyone goes off and calls out the creators of the HTTYD series as trying to appeal to their standardized versions of what they think little girls like, instead try to come up with your own version of why the female Nightfuries would be a vastly different color. (Maybe the male Nightfuries go and hunt out in the nighttime for protection, but the females possibly have a built in magical defense or special power where they don’t need camoflauge)
5) To reiterate the first point this is a children’s animated film and it’s made to appeal to children. It’s a wonderful thing that the creators behind this film put enough thought and effort and hard work and determination to make a story that appeals to the younger generation and the older generations. But ultimately, Dreamworks is a company that makes films specifically aimed at younger children and what they would like. And if you try and get angry enough that this anger actually manifests into something big enough to ruin this experience for younger kids that Actually Want To See This Movie,
The the bad guy isn’t Dreamworks, the bad guy is you.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. It’s okay to like things and dislike things, but don’t knee-jerk reaction everything and ruin this experience for everyone else.
